Skill or Talent

skill: a learned power of doing something competently: a developed aptitude or ability.
talent: the natural endowments of a person.

Yesterday, as I was walking through Kroger with my kids, Zach posed a question:
Zach: Mom do I have any talents?
Me: Of course you do, everyone has talents.
Z: What are mine then, I'm sure I don't have any. I can't think of them.
M: Well lets see....you're good at drawing, that's a talent.
Z: No it's not. That's a skill.
M: Nope it's a talent for you. Not everyone can draw. A skill is something that has to be taught and a talent is just something that your good at. I can draw, because I was taught, but not very well. You and Uncle John can draw because you just pick up a pencil and think of great things to draw, and you are always practicing. Even if I take all the classes in the world I can never draw as well as you or Uncle John. You are just naturally good at it.

Z: Oh, OK.

And I may be a little biased, because I AM his mom, but I think he's pretty good for 7. You can judge for yourselves.

Oh, he's definitely talented.
And you are a good mom. This is why your kids know everything---you explain things so well.

And, I'd like a little clarification on #19 on the translations list. It really feels like something I'd like to adopt into my Missouri-Utah-California-Idaho-Texas-Iowa dialect. But I can't be sure.

Creativity is impossible to teach! It's a talent.
