Yesterday Casey came home from school with his yellow folder, full of different kinds of information. Tucked neatly into the folder was a certificate that read: "This is to certify that FOX is learning to work 'BEARY' well with others." I started to laugh because Fox is his middle name. I thought there had to be some mix up at school, because all his other certificates had come home with Casey on them. His folder even says Casey...... I may not be the sharpest pencil in the box, but I'm still pretty sharp. I knew this day would come, I just didn't expect it so soon. The day he would realize that Casey was not only a boys name, but a girls name as well. And there just happens to be a girl in the whole of Kindergarten, whose name is Casey. (A little background note on Casey; it doesn't take much to embarrass him to the point devastation. A little song here, cheering wildly for his baseball team, he just likes to go along unnoticed in group situations. Individually it's a different story.)
Now my problem had become, how do I approach this in a way where he won't be embarrassed to tell me his reasoning? There was no such way. He got red in the face and tried to curl up so he thought I couldn't see him,

We talked about how it was OK to change your name, if you wanted to. After all it is his name. I told him that originally Casey was a boys name and that it meant 'brave', and that one day someone decided that they liked it for a girls name as well. But it still will always be a boys name first. Then I asked him if he changed it because there was a girl Casey in another class. He said no. He thinks that Fox is a cool name. I asked him if he wanted us to start calling him Fox and he said no, he's Casey at home and Fox at school and I have a sneaking suspicion that the girl is in fact the reason. Call it mothers intuition. It's not the first time he's changed his mind on his name, and I don't expect it will be the last.
Now from name changes and on to Vagisil. Betcha thought those two would never go together.

Around the same time of year Zach gets and infection in his nose. I wouldn't exactly call it an infection but it scabs form rubbing, picking or what ever he does to it during the dry season. This last Sunday, I told him to run and put some polysporin on it. It took him awhile and Jason decided to go see if he could help. He found him slathering up his nose with my Vagisil anti-itch cream! I have never laughed so hard in my life, in another room of course. Thankfully it had not been offically used, and Jason directed him to the correct tube. I guess his nose won't be itching him for a while!
